Coordinate System

Venn Diagram: Map and Globe

Simple video animation (watch the short video to answer the following Guide Questions):

Guide Questions:
1. What are the four imaginary lines on the globe?
2. At what degree is the equator located?

Coordinate System
  • an arrangement of reference lines or imaginary lines on the globe
  • can determine and describe the position or location of any place on the Earth’s surface

Imaginary lines on the globe:
  • latitude
  • longitude
  • equator
  • prime meridian

Latitude
- a horizontal imaginary line running from east to west on the Earth’s surface

Lines of Latitude or Parallels

  • lines that run parallel to the equator and never intersect
  • get smaller towards the poles than closer to the equator
  • measured in degrees

Longitude
- a vertical imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole

Lines of Longitude or Meridians

  • important for setting time zones
  • measured in equal degrees per line

Equator
- an imaginary line dividing the Earth’s surface into two hemispheres;
  • the Northern Hemisphere – half of the globe from the equator to the North Pole,
  • the Southern Hemisphere – half of the globe from the equator to the South Pole

Prime Meridian
  • an imaginary line dividing the Earth’s surface into two hemispheres; Western Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere
  • serves as a reference point for measuring the distance east or west, located at zero degrees at Greenwich, England
